Who is Angus McLean...

My personal life

I grew up in the 80’s, so most of my taste-or lack thereof-is from that era. I read somewhere that the music you were listening to at 14 is what you’ll be listening to at 40. It seems about right to me.

When I was 14 I was listening to a lot of glam rock (which wasn’t good for the environment with all that hair spray being thrown about recklessly) plus my Dad’s old albums-the Beatles, the Eagles, Neil Diamond, Simon and Garfunkel.

Yeah, I know, I know…like these guys, a little bar band from New Jersey called Bon Jovi. Go on, laugh…but I betcha know the words to Livin’ on a Prayer!

I was also into muscle cars in a big way, so my room was pretty much adorned with posters of guitar bands, hot rock chicks, and American cars. Firebirds (as below), Mustangs, Camaros, that sorta thing. Again, probably not so good for the environment with those big block engines, but ohmyGod they were so cool.

Once I was kinda grown up I joined the Police.

Why? The great pay and benefits? The night shifts? The working-all-the-time-when-your-mates-are-partying? Nah, pretty much just to catch bad guys. Sounds corny, I know, but another reason was to make a difference. Has it happened? For sure. I know I’ve made a difference.

I’ll never save the world, but if I worried about that I’d never get outta bed in the morning. One thing at a time.

The Writer

So who is Angus McLean? As well as being a hairy amateur writer, I’m a husband and father, a serving Police officer, and a fan of crime fiction, action movies, private eye shows and music.

Angus McLean is the pen name I use for my writing, to keep my writing life separate from my other working life. Maybe at some stage I’ll drop the pseudonym, but for now, the anonymity it brings suits me.

Writing has been a constant companion since I was at primary school. I remember writing stories about my mates and I, basically rewritten movie or TV plots with us as the stars. When I say us, I mean me, with some sidekicks. You know, the ones who marvel at the skill and ingenuity of the lead guy, and who sometimes get killed (it gives the hero more motivation to get the baddies, so sometimes your mates have got to be expendable).

I’ve been publishing since July 2014, not as much as I had hoped I would but more than I ever dreamed I could. The problem is, time is never a friend for part-time authors. I write as much as I can but not nearly enough.

The dream would be to have Ian Fleming’s (photo right) life of living in Jamaica for three months every year and firing out another best selling novel, but the reality is that it’s stolen minutes here and there when possible.

So for now, I’ll keep plugging away, writing what I like and hoping others like it too.

(PS I don’t own the copyright of any of these images, apart from the top one of my computer. Hopefully Jon, Mr Pontiac, the NZ Police and Fleming’s estate don’t mind that some hack from the bottom of the world is using their cool images).
